The UK government has announced a further GBP500m will be available to boost the sale and use of electric and hybrid vehicles.

About GBP200m will be earmarked for grants of 25%, or a maximum of GBP5,000, towards the cost of an ultra-low emission vehicle.

Additional charging points will be installed at motorway service areas and on major trunk roads while cities and towns will be given money to allow them to provide free parking for electric cars plus other incentives encouraged to wean drivers off petrol and diesel engines.

There will also be grants to support research and development.

The money set aside to subsidise buyers of ultra-low emission vehicles has raised a few eyebrows since it assumes sales of 8,000 vehicles a year for the five years from 2015. This is more than double the 3,500 sold in 2013.
