The European Focus will be available with the company’s new three cylinder one-litre EcoBoost engine here in the UK this month; Ford claims the engine delivers performance to rival a traditional 1.6-litre engine but with significantly improved fuel economy and class-leading ultra-low CO2 emissions.
The new engine is available with two power levels – in the five-door Focus at 125PS it delivers official EU test combined fuel economy of 56.5mpg and CO2 emissions of 114g/km which the company says is unmatched by Focus competitors with similar power outputs; the 100PS version delivers gets 58.9mpg and emits best-in-petrol-class CO2 emissions of 109g/km.

The engine was developed by engineers based at Dunton and Dagenham in England and Ford noted the cylinder block can fit onto a sheet of A4 paper. Despite its size, it delivers up to 125PS and 170Nm peak torque (200Nm with overboost) between 1,400 and 4,500rpm, giving it the highest power density of any production engine the automaker has offered to date.
Graham Hoare, Ford’s European executive powertrain director, based at Dunton, said: “This is the third addition to our acclaimed EcoBoost engine family… [and] signals a new era of downsized, super frugal engines for the sub-130PS segment. During development our UK engineers focused on improving thermal efficiency and reducing friction of the engine’s internal moving parts, especially during warm-up.”
This engine will also be available in the C-Max and Grand C-Max MPVs and the new B-Max (to be launched at the Geneva show in March) from later this year.
