Diesel powered cars won an all-time high market share amongst new registrations in Western Europe, according to market data supplied by Bosch, which has a vested interest as a major supplier of engine parts.
In October 2004, 51.9% of all newly registered passenger cars were equipped with diesel engines, up 5.3%.
Diesel’s share in the UK reached 37.1% compared with 29.6% in October 2003. In Italy, the share increased from 52.9% to 60.4% and in Germany a new record was achieved with 47.9%, a 6.4% increase over October 2003. The highest penetration for newly registered cars with diesel engines were recorded in Austria, Belgium and France with more than 70%.
Upper middle-class cars had a diesel share of 62.5% with 61.4% in the mid-class. The highest growth rates were for high-end cars, where the diesel share increased 9% to 44.4%, and in the compact class with a 7.1% increase to 33.2%.
