Citroën UK is celebrating something of a coup with its decision to sell the ‘Lounge’ special edition of the five-seat C4 Picasso.

Paris headquarters offered the car across Europe, but only the UK decided to take it. Buyer reaction to the GBP23,995 model has been fantastic, according to one Citroën UK spokesman.

They seem to be very happy to pay GBP2,000 more than they would for the range-topping Exclusive only to lose one seat in the rear – but gets lots of black leather, black bodywork, chrome wheels, a panoramic sunroof and a Philips NXT sound system with flat-panel speaker technology.

Since the Lounge is a special edition and not a limited edition, Citroën can order more if they want and word is that the ‘Lounge’ special edition idea could be used on other models in the range.

This edition is the latest chapter in the Picasso success story. The decision to run the previous generation Xsara Picasso alongside the new C4 Picasso has paid off handsomely. Picasso sales in 2007 were around 40,000 of Citroën’s sales total of 97,750, split fairly evenly between Xsara and C4 versions.

The Picasso was also the number one MPV in Europe.

“We’re going to continue this strategy with Berlingo Multispace when the new one comes later this year,” said the Citroën spokesman who confirmed that the Xsara Picasso will continue in production until at least 2010.

In France, current Berlingo will carry on and be called Berlingo First when the new one arrives “but we haven’t yet decided what we will call it in the UK,” said the spokesman.

Meanwhile the company is gearing up for the launch of its redesigned C5 in March with an estate/wagon – which it will call Tourer – arriving in the summer.
