BMW will reveal a feast of new models at the British International Motor Show (October 18-29). The BMW Stand (6530) will show models which represent no fewer than 23 UK premieres as well as exciting new models such as the Z8 super sports car and the X5 4.4i, BMW’s Sports Activity Vehicle which goes on sale to the public on 17 October. Adjacent to the BMW stand, Alpina will give the B3 3.3 Convertible its world debut.
Topping the list of UK premieres are the 343 bhp M3 which will be on sale early in 2001, the Z9 Convertible Concept Car which made its world debut less than three weeks ago in Paris and the 750hL, BMW’s zero emissions car powered by liquid hydrogen.
Other show premieres include the face-lifted 5 Series Saloon and Touring models powered by new 2.2, 2.5 and 3.0 litre straight six petrol engines and a new 2.5 litre straight six diesel. Minor exterior enhancements allied to new, more powerful and economical engines are intended to maintain the 5 Series leadership in the executive sector of the market.
These same straight six engines are also fitted to 3 Series Saloon, Coupé, Touring and Convertible – a total of 12 new models – whilst Z3 receives the 2.2 and 3.0 litre units. The new 2.2 litre engine brings back the much-loved 320i name to BMW showrooms and produces 170 bhp, the same as the former 2.5 whilst the new 3.0 litre sets new class standards with 231 bhp.
Apart from these new models, the BMW stand will carry two examples of BMW’s highly praised diesel models, the four cylinder 320d SE Touring and the ‘muscle car’ 330d Sport. BMW’s ‘super car with four doors’ – the M5 – will join the luxurious V12 750iL and the C1 Urban Commuter to round off the stand.

By GlobalDataAll BMW models, including the new X5, benefit from price realignments and additional specifications which were effective on 1 September 2000. On average the value increase was over 10 per cent with the M5 reaching a value increase of 16.9 per cent.
“This adjustment to pricing is what customers demanded and expected,” said Jim O’Donnell, Managing Director of BMW (GB) Ltd. “It seems to me that stability has been restored in the UK market and I believe that the outlook for the balance of 2000 and into 2001 is encouraging.”
Demonstrating this stability O’Donnell pointed out that in September the BMW 3 Series range had set an all-time chart success for BMW. “3 Series was the seventh best selling model in September ahead of the Ford Ka, Vauxhall Vectra and the VW Golf. The private buyer has returned and residual values have stabilised,” he said.
One final new model
MINI will be represented at the Show on a separate stand to reinforce its independent brand status. BMW (GB) Ltd has appointed Mark Harrison as Media Relations Executive for MINI with effect from the British International Motor Show. His replacement in the BMW Corporate Communications department will be announced in due course.
