UK automotive association, The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), says April coach registrations rose 14.2% as operators gear up for the traditionally busy summer period.

The body adds the overall market remains positive, with year-to-date volumes growing 12.7% to 3,057 units.

Purpose-built double-deck bus demand rose 45.9% as need dipped for larger single-deckers.

“The purpose-built coach market enjoyed its third month of consecutive growth in April as operators continued to invest in new models ahead of the busy summer season,” said SMMT chief executive, Mike Hawes.

“This helped offset a dip in bus demand to maintain strong year-to-date-volumes for the sector as a whole, with overall registrations up 12.7%.”
