A surge in economic activity after a drawn-out election may reduce the fall in Turkey’s domestic vehicle sales to 10% by the end of the year, the head of the local automotive industry association has said.

Car sales had declined 18.5%, general secretary Ercan Tezer told Reuters on Thursday.

“We have been seeing demand being postponed since last year … If the demand we have seen in August continues we can expect to close the year with a year-on-year decline of 10%,” he was quoted as saying.

Sales rose some 16% in August, normally a quiet month, in a sign demand was returning after a parliamentary election in July and presidential vote in August, he told the news agency.

According to Reuters, Tezer said vehicle exports this year were expected up 39% year on year to around $US20bn and would rise another 15 to 20% in 2008.
