The Turkish News Digest reports that Mazda plans investments in Turkey depending on the decisions of the summit of the European Union on December 17, 2004 when the EU leaders will decide whether to open entry talks with Ankara. The report cited as source the managing director of Mazda Motor Turkey, Veysel Mermer, said.

Mazda Motor, which considers Turkey as a production base for Europe and Asia, will invest an unnamed sum in a plant near the western Turkish city of Izmir, the report said. All that the Japanese company wants in order to invest is Turkey’s EU membership and stability, Mermer said.

Mermer also pointed out that countries such as Bulgaria and Romania offer a 10-year tax exemption for foreign investors.
