Japan’s Toyota Motor Corporation reported a 7.5% year-on-year decline in global sales to 832,618 units in August 2026, including its Lexus and Daihatsu brands. Sales in Japan rose slightly in the month to 134,748 units, while overseas sales fell by almost 9% to 697,870 units, with deliveries affected by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and rising competition in global markets.

In the first eight months of the year, the group’s global sales fell by 3.1% to 7,107,899 units, with sales in Japan rising by 5.4% to 1,414,285 units, while overseas sales fell by 5.0% to 5,693,614 units. The data do not include sales by Japanese truck maker Hino, which was spun off from the group at the end of March 2026.

Global sales of Toyota- and Lexus-branded vehicles combined fell by 3.6% to 6,655,766 units year-to-date, with sales in Japan rising by 6.0% to 1,059,885 units, while overseas sales fell by 5.2% to 5,595,881 units. Sales in North America rose slightly to 1,959,400 units in this period, with sales in the US slightly lower at 1,675,308 units, while deliveries in Latin America (excluding Mexico) fell by 4.2% to 315,224 units. In Asia, excluding Japan, sales fell by 9% to 1,899,779 units, reflecting mainly a 19% plunge in China to 927,866 units. In Europe, volumes were almost 1% higher at 788,027 units.

Toyota and Lexus reported a 10% rise in global sales of electrified vehicles to 3,616,595 units in the first eight months of 2026, accounting for over 54% of total sales. Global sales of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) rose by 129% to 267,649 units, most of which were sold overseas, while sales of hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) rose by 5.3% to 3,093,426 units.

Daihatsu’s global sales increased by 4.7% to 452,133 units year-to-date, with sales in Japan growing by 3.6% to 354,400 units, while overseas sales increased by 9.2% to 97,733 units.
