Toyota said it was recalling a further 1.2m vehicles in the US due to possible fuel pump failures that can cause engines to stall and potentially cause accidents.

The company had already recalled around 700,000 vehicles in the country last January for the same problem, bringing the total recall to date to 1.9m vehicles across a broad range of models.

The vehicles affected by the US recall include the Tundra and Tacoma pickup trucks, Highlander and Sequoia SUVs and Avalon, Camry and Corolla passenger cars built since 2018.

The recall also affects a large number of Lexus models.

Owners whose cars were not in the January recall will be notified in early May about appointments to replace the fuel pump at no cost.

The US is by far Toyota's largest single market globally, with of 2,383,000 vehicle sales last year – equivalent to around 23% of its global sales.

The US call back is part of a programme now involving 3.2m vehicles worldwide, Reuters reported.

The automaker told the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in January it was aware of 66 field reports and 2,571 warranty claims that relate to fuel pump failures in the vehicles initially recalled, the news agency said.

Owners have complained of rough engine running, engine not starting and loss of power while driving at low speeds.

Toyota told Reuters the reports occurred more commonly in areas of the southern US with warmer climate.
