Toyota Motor North America is recalling 49,000 2016 Prius and Lexus RX vehicles and 2015 – 2016 Lexus NX vehicles to fix and airbag problem.

The automaker's Australian unit is recalling 24,000 Corolla, HiLux, Fortuner and Prius models produced from June 2015 until December 2015 for a similar reason.

The vehicles have airbag systems where an open circuit could be created over time. If this were to occur, the air bag warning light will illuminate and the side and curtain shield air bags and/or front air bags may not deploy. Air bag non-deployment, obviously, could increase the risk of injury to the occupants in the event of a crash.

Dealers will check the serial number of the sensors and replace them, if necessary, at no cost to owners. All known US keepers will receive a notification starting late in March 2018.

In Australia, Toyota said due to two separate manufacturing issues, there is a possibility insulation layers of IC chips could peel over time, creating an open circuit in the IC chip.

If this occurs, the airbag warning light will illuminate. Additionally, the side/curtain shield airbags and/or front airbags, may become deactivated.
