Ahead of the 1 March on sale date, Toyota has chopped the UK prices of its Prius PHV from GBP34,895 for the ‘entry level’ Business Edition Plus to GBP31,695 with a clever optional (and extra GBP1,500) solar panel sunroof available only for that version.

The posher Excel with leather trim is now GBP33,895, down from GBP37,095 as first announced.

Most buyers will qualifiy for the UK government plug-in car grant, shaving a further GBP2,500 off the price.

A Toyota GB spokesman said the reasons were complex but the decision had been taken – ahead of launch – to ensure the new model was ‘competitive’ in its segment, taking into account rival models.
