The Renault-Nissan alliance has delayed its goal of selling 1.5m electric vehicles world wide by two to three years, Nissan president and chief executive officer Carlos Ghosn said.

The goal was originally set for “by fiscal 2016”, Jiji News reported, but Ghosn said that was optimistic and it would now take two to three more years to reach.

Nissan released the Leaf electric vehicle in December 2010 and Renault launched its EVs in October 2011.

But sales have not increased as expected due mainly to a lack of charging facilities.

To the end of October 2013, Nissan’s cumulative electric vehicle sales were about 87,000 units while Renault had sold about 33,000.

Nissan will launch the e-NV200 commercial electric vehicle in fiscal 2014 and plans two more electric vehicle models by fiscal 2016.
