Toyota Motor plans to invest THB6bn (US$196m) to expand production capacity of petrol engines in Thailand by 100,000 to 840,000 units per year in Thailand by 2014, according to local reports.
The investment will be channeled through Siam Toyota Manufacturing (STM), which is 96% owned by Toyota Motor and controls the Chonburi-based engine plant. It was established in 1987 and currently employs 2,131 people.
STM produces Toyota’s VVTi engines used in vehicles produced locally and in other markets in the Asia-Pacific region, such as Taiwan and Vietnam. After the increase, the plant will account for close to 10% of Toyota’s global engine output.
STM will take on 200 additional workers, increase aluminium casting capacity at the plant and will increase local content of the engines.
