Toyota Motor plans to localise production of its Hiace light van in Thailand later this year, according to local reports.

Toyota sold more than 16,000 Hiace vans in Thailand in 2011, imported from completely built-up units from Japan and Malaysia.

Thai Auto Works, a local Toyota subsidiary, is said to be planning to assemble the vans at its plant in Samut Prakan, located just outside Bangkok, at a rate of around 20,000 units per year.

The plant has been closed since May 2010, with production of the Hilux pickup truck and Fortuner produced at other plants within the group.
