Toyota aims to raise its Thai vehicle sales by 20% to 280,000 this year after 24.1% growth in 2004, its Thai president Ryoichi Sasaki told the Reuters news agency.

Toyota sold 234,177 cars and trucks in 2004 and expected its share of the Thai market to rise to 40% in 2005 from 37.4% last year, Sasaki reportedly said, adding that one-tonne pickup truck sales were expected to rise 34% to 165,000 this year, taking its market share of the segment to 40% from 33.4% in 2004.

Reuters noted that the ambitious truck sales target will follow a hefty 23.3% rise in 2004, boosted by the launch of new Vigo pick-up models in the Thai market in the fourth quarter of 2004.

Toyota also planned to become the biggest vehicle exporter from Thailand in 2005, by raising its vehicle exports sharply to 150,000 from 52,682 in 2004, Sasaki told the news agency, adding that pick-up trucks would make up about two thirds of its planned exports from Thailand.

“Our planned total car and truck output in Thailand, of 405,000 units for both the domestic market and export, will make the country the third biggest production base for Toyota after Japan and the United States,” Sasaki told Reuters.
