Dow Jones reports that new vehicle sales in Thailand in April rose 9% from a year ago to 55,920 units, a Thai unit of Toyota Motor Corp. (TM) said in a monthly report Friday.

Sales were helped by lingering positive momentum from the Bangkok Motor Show, the report said. However, sales were slightly down from the previous month due to a shift away from spending on car purchases to tuition payments ahead of the new schooling semester mid-May.

Toyota claimed a market share of 40.9% in April, equivalent to 22,857 units, followed by Isuzu (7202.TO) with a 25.1% market share, or 14,029 units.

Of the new vehicles sold in April, 16,004 were passenger cars, down 7.4% on year. Toyota and Honda Motor Co. (HMC) dominated the passenger car market, with market share of 47.1% and 31.3%, respectively.

Commercial vehicle sales, which include sales of one-ton pickup trucks, rose 17.3% on year, to 39,916 units. Toyota topped the segment with a 38.4% market share, followed by Isuzu with a 35.1% market share.
