German automotive components manufacturers are targeting Thailand for new investment
projects in Asia. A dozen German component companies are showcasing their products
at the Asia Automotive 2000 Fair taking place in Bangkok this week. Angela Mans
of the German automotive trade association, the VDA, said that the event will
“further promote Thailand as the ‘Detroit of the East'”. Lower production costs,
recovering car sales and a large population are encouraging investors to set up
strategic production bases, she added. Ms Mans also maintained that Thailand has
higher potential than its neighbours to become the region’s export hub, citing
lower import tariffs on vehicles and parts, a commitment to free trade and a democratic
government.
