Ford Thailand has launched the Everest, which the automaker claimed is Thailand’s first mid-sized SUV with a five-speed automatic transmission and side airbags as standard.

It’s powered by a new generation ‘Duratorq’ common-rail engine and standard safety features also include ABS and EBD.

Ford Thailand has also claimed an industry first for its ‘five-year worry free driving’ package included with the new SUV.

The new five-speed automatic transmission system has a transmission control module (TCM) that automatically detects and quickly adjusts to changing engine speeds and driving conditions to keep the engine in its peak power band while providing the best possible fuel economy.

The 4WD transmission has a Borg Warner transfer system and electronic active ‘shift-on-the-fly’, allowing the driver to shift from 2WD to 4WD at speeds up to 100km/h (62mph).

The new range of premium family SUVs offers 2.5 or three-litre diesel engines with either two- or four-wheel drive.

The three-litre TDCi engine produces maximum torque of 380NM at 1,800 rpm and 115kW (156hp) power at 3,200 rpm. The 2.5-litre model produces 330Nm at 1,800 rpm, and 105kW (143hp) at 3,500 rpm. As well as producing claimed best-in-class torque and power, the 2.5L models enjoy 22% better fuel economy.

The updated Everest has four airbags as standard and body construction has been strengthened significantly with door intrusion beams and reinforced A, B and C-pillars to manage crash forces away from the driver and passengers while still maintaining the shape and integrity of the passenger safety cell.

Headlamps have been improved with a greater light distribution while upgraded tail lamps, side indicators and a new centre high-mounted stop lamp improve visibility.

New features include power foldable door mirrors with indicator and puddle lamps.

The second row seat can be easily folded while the third row seat is the first in this class in Thailand that can be completely removed. Separate air-conditioning outlets are fitted for each seat row and the audio system includes a 6-CD changer and speed-related volume control.

The standard five year worry free driving package includes a five-year/150,000km extended warranty on normal wear and tear of the vehicle parts in normal driving conditions, five-year scheduled maintenance and roadside assistance.

The updated Everest will be shown on Ford’s stand at the Thailand International Motor Expo 2007 in Muang Thong Thani from 30 November.
