Thailand’s new vehicle sales in February jumped 23.7% year on year to 49,044 units, due to a continuing surge in consumer spending, according to Toyota Motor Thailand figures.


Dow Jones said that, in February, Toyota Motor Thailand led overall vehicle sales in terms of market share, with 37.2%, followed by Isuzu Motors, which recorded a 24.8% market share.


Passenger car sales reportedly rose 19.5% year on year to 16,864 units, led by Toyota and Honda Motor, with market shares of 47.5% and 36.8% respectively, while sales of one-ton pickup trucks surged 27.1% to 28,611 units.


Overall commercial vehicle sales, which include one-ton pickup trucks, soared 26% to 32.180 units, Dow Jones said, noting that the sector was dominated by Isuzu, with a 37.9% market share, and Toyota, with a 31.8% share.


During the first two months this year, vehicle sales rose 20.3% to 93,167 units and Toyota Motor Thailand expects vehicle sales this year to climb to 590,000-600, 000 units from 533,176 sold in 2003, the report added.
