BMW expects Thai sales to rise by “at least 60%” in the second half of 2010, helped by the launch of the new 5-series model at the BMW Xpo in the 3rd quarter of the year. This would bring full-year sales to at least 3,750 units – compared with 2,356 units in 2009.

BMW (Thailand) president Michael Kordys hopes the new model will rise to the top of the country’s medium-sized premium car segment.

However, he added a note of caution to his second-half sales target, as “deliveries in the third quarter likely to be affected by the riots in April and May”. He added the company is optimistic that “it will have a very successful second half nevertheless”.

Sales of BMW cars increased by 60% to 1,408 units in the first half of the year, while Mini sales rose by 27% to 158 units.

BMW has also requested that the Thai government exempt certain imported parts from local inspection by the Thai Industrial Standards Institute (TISI), as checks already take place at origin prior to export.
