New vehicle sales in Thailand increased by 52% year-on-year in August to 65,724 units, from 43,251 units a year earlier, according to data compiled by Toyota Motor Thailand.
The country’s economy continues to benefit from a strong recovery from last year’s domestic and global economic slowdown.
The cumulative eight-month total rose by 53.6% to 488,098 units, from 317,835 units a year earlier.
Sales of passenger vehicle rose by over 58% to 28,118 units in August, helped by strong demand for the new Nissan March and Mazda 2 models. Nissan sales rose by 212% to 2,620 units, while Mazda sales increased by 581% to 2,262 units. Toyota continued to lead the segment with 11,121 sales (+31%), followed by Honda with 9,119 units (+43%).
Commercial vehicle sales rose by 48% to 37,606 units, with pickup trucks accounting for 32,490 of these – up by just over 49% year-on-year. Toyota dominated the pickup segment with 14,592 Hilux sales, 57.8% more than a year earlier; followed by Isuzu with 10,688 units (+30.2%).
