Combined new vehicle sales in ASEAN’s big four markets – Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines – totalled 177,644 units in the first two months of the year, a 19 percent gain over year-ago levels.

Data compiled by Automotive Resources Asia (ARA) shows that year-on-year February figures in Malaysia decreased 2 percent to 29,422 vehicles. Thailand sales rose 36 percent to 26,802 units in February 2002. Indonesia’s sales totalled 22,763 units, 0.4 percent down. Vehicle sales in Philippines declined by 0.6 percent to 5,917 units.

May Arthapan, an associate at ARA, said:  “ASEAN s Big Four markets showed mixed results during the past two months. Consumer confidence remained strong in Thailand reflected in rising automobile sales, while Malaysia and Indonesia showed signs of a slow down in demand. Overall, we expect the market to grow in the high single-digit range in
2002.”

Proton and Toyota co-led the ASEAN market, each with a 20 percent share. They were followed by Perodua and Isuzu each with an 11percent share, Mitsubishi (10 percent), Nissan (6 percent) and Honda (5 percent).
