Tesla said it would continue to expand its electric vehicle recharging network in China by an additional 4,000 supercharging sites by the end of the year, as it looks to strengthen its position in the world's largest electric vehicle market.

The US electric vehicle manufacturer began production at a new plant in Shanghai at the end of last year, allowing it to cut the price of its now locally made Model 3.

The company said it sold 19,230 vehicles in China in the first quarter of 2020, making Tesla one of the best selling electric vehicle brands in the country.

Tesla plans to produce a second model at the Shanghai plant in 2021, the Model Y SUV.

At present Tesla has 2,500 supercharging sites and 2,400 destination charging sites located in China's main cities and its network will be expanded to close to 9,000 overall by the end of the year.

Tesla claims its new V3 supercharging sites can provide up to 250kW of power per car, giving a Model 3 at peak operating efficiency an additional range of 120km in just five minutes of recharging.
