Elon Musk is expected to lead an unveiling of autonomous robotaxi prototypes event in California later today.

The event Tesla has dubbed “We, Robot” is scheduled to begin at 7 pm California time at Warner Bros. Discovery Inc.’s movie studio near Los Angeles. Reports say Wall Street analysts and many of Tesla’s most prominent influencers are among those invited to attend.

Tesla is expected to show its purpose-built robotaxi, or ‘Cybercab’. It’s expected that human drivers won’t need to be present to operate the car.

Tesla’s robotaxis will use a combination of cameras and computing power to operate on public roads. While autonomous vehicles (AVs) from General Motors’ Cruise and Google Waymo also rely on laser-based sensors known as LiDAR (light detection and ranging), Elon Musk has frequently dismissed that tech as too expensive and not required.

The Tesla AV unveiling event has been delayed from an initial plan to showcase the vehicle and its tech in August.

Earlier this year, Tesla also cancelled its small car Model 2 project, a new entry-level Tesla car. Instead it said it would continue developing robotaxis on the small vehicle platform.
