New vehicle sales in Taiwan fell by 4.3% to 45,430 units in January, which the industry attributes to fewer working days in the month due to the Lunar New Year holidays.
Hotai Motor, which distributes Toyota and Lexus cars, reported sales of 14,101 units last month for a market share of close to 31% – helped by the recent launch of the Sienta compact MPV and strong demand for the Corolla compact sedan.
Yulon Nissan Motor, which sells Nissan and local Luxgen branded cars, reported 5,816 sales to claim a 12.8% market share, while. Mitsubishi distributor China Motor Corporation sold 4,707 vehicles; followed by Honda with 3,437 units; and Mercedes-Benz with 2,861 units.
Last year the local vehicle market enjoyed record sales of almost 440,000 units, helped by government incentives of TWD50,000 (US$1,617) offered to new car buyers who scrap or export their old cars.
The industry hopes that the scrappage incentives, put in place for a period of five years, will help drive the market to a new record high this year.
