New vehicle sales in Taiwan increased by 4% to 44,301 units in January, compared with 42,595 units in the same month of last year, according to local reports.
The market was lifted by a rush to buy before the Lunar New Year, which fell at the end of the month. Volumes are expected to decline sharply month on month in February due to fewer working days, with Toyota/Lexus distributor Hotai Motor predicting total industry volume falling back to as low as 20,000 units.
Hotai led the market in January with 13,399 sales – taking a 30.2% market share. Its best seller was the Corolla Altis model, with 4,660 sales.
Yulon Nissan Motor, which distributes the Nissan and Infiniti brands, sold 5,921 units, including 2,289 Super Sentra models, for a total market share of 13.4%.
Mitsubishi distributor China Motor sold 4,719 vehicles, for a 10.7% market share.
Luxgen Motor, a unit of Yulon Motor, reported a sharp increase in sales to 3,101 units, for a 7% share of total vehicle sales. The Luxgen brand claimed fourth spot ahead of Ford thanks to 2,237 sales of the newly-launched U6 Turbo sport utility vehicle.
