New vehicle sales in Taiwan rose by over 12% year on year to 24,215 units in February, after weak sales in the previous month due to the lunar new year holidays.

While market leader Hotai Motor, distributor of Toyota, Lexus and Hino vehicles, reported a 7.9% drop in sales to 6,048 units last month, Mitsubishi Motors distributor China Motor Corporation enjoyed a strong month ahead of the launch of its new Lancer – with sales rising by 29% to 3,003 units.

Yulon Nissan Motor saw its sales fall by almost 15% to 2,011 units last month, followed by Mercedes with 1,620 sales and BMW with 1,084 units.

The overall market expanded by just under 1% to 69,645 units in the first two months of the year, reflecting weak sales in January.

The industry expects the market to decline by 3-5% to around 420,000-430,000 units this year, from 440,000 units in 2016.
