New vehicle sales in Taiwan were just slightly higher at 34,680 units in April compared with 34,458 units in the same month of last year, according to local reports citing registration data compiled by Taiwan's Directorate of Highways.
This followed sharp declines in previous months and brought the cumulative year-to-date sales total to 130,854 units, down by 12% on the 148,619 units sold in the same period of last year.
Hotai Motor, distributor of Toyota, Lexus and Hino vehicles, saw its sales jump by 17.5% to 11,900 vehicles in April, with deliveries of the new Corolla Altis sedan and RAV4 SUV starting up following their launch in March. Strong demand for these best selling models was expected to help drive the market forward in the coming months.
Mitsubishi Motors distributor China Motor Corporation saw its sales fall by 2% to 3,746 vehicles last month from 3,823 units a year earlier, with year-to-date sales at 11,538 units – down from 17,290 units a year earlier.
Yulon Nissan's sales fell by 1.8% to 2,974 units in April from 3,029 units a year earlier, while year-to-date sales were down by 7.4% at 11,080 units.
Honda Taiwan saw its sales fall by 8.9% to 2,689 units last month, with year-to-date sales at 10,263 units while Mercedes-Benz's sales were down by 0.8% year-on-year at 2,238 units in April.
