Taiwan's new vehicle market declined by just over 11% to 30,822 units in April 2020 from 34,680 units a year earlier, according to local reports citing registration data compiled by Taiwan's Directorate of Highways.
After growing over 8% to 104,046 units in the first quarter of the year, the market came under pressure in April from weakening consumer sentiment as the COVID-19 pandemic continued to spread rapidly across the world.
Sales in the first four months of the year were up by just 3.1% at 134,868 units from 130,854 units in the same period of last year.
Imported vehicles slightly outperformed the overall market in the four month period, with sales rising by 12.4% to 68,197 units, while domestic sales declined by just over 5% to 66,671 units.
Toyota reported a 6.4% sales rise to 38,872 units in the first four months of the year, thanks to strong demand for the Corolla and RAV4 models, while Yulon Nissan sales fell 12% to 9,606 units; Mercedes-Benz 9,531 units (+0.1%); Honda 7,879 (-23.2%); Mitsubishi 7,207 (-5.8%); and Lexus 7,039 (+6.4%).
