New vehicle sales in Taiwan fell by 7.9% to 44,143 units in January from peak year-earlier sales of 47,936 units, according to local reports citing registration data compiled by Taiwan's Directorate of Highways.

The vehicle market last year declined by just 2.1% to 435,135 units from record volume of 444,669 units in 2017, despite weakening domestic sentiment as a result of the US-China trade dispute and slowing exports. 

Imports last month continued to gain ground with sales rising by 5.9% to 20,108 units to claim a market share of 45.6%.

Toyota brand sales fell by 1.6% to 11,479 units in January, with the Yaris subcompact its best-selling model with 2,283 sales followed by the Corolla Altis with 2,155 units and the RAV4 with 1,922 units. 

Lexus accounted for a further 3,183 units last month but Mercedes-Benz remained the best-selling luxury brand with 3,290 registrations.

Yulon Nissan sold a total of 3,683 vehicles in January with the Kicks subcompact its best-selling model with 1,620 sales; followed by Honda with 3,525 sales – underpinned by strong demand for SUV models such as the CRV and HRV with 1,792 and 982 sales respectively.
