New vehicle sales in Taiwan fell by 10.9 % to 36,011 units in November from 40,436 units a year earlier, according to local reports citing registration data compiled by Taiwan's Directorate of Highways.

The market is struggling to move forward from last year's peak levels with domestic sentiment in recent months affected by the deepening trade friction between the US and China as well as the weakening outlook for exports.

GDP growth slowed to 2.3% year on year in the third quarter from 3.3% in the second quarter, reflecting weaker exports and slower growth in private and public spending.

Total vehicle sales in the first 11 months of the year fell by 2.3% to 393,142 units from 402,452 units a year earlier.

Sales of imported vehicles rose by 0.7% to 17,158 units last month and by 6.4% to 177,651 units year to date, equivalent to just over 45% of the total vehicle market.

Toyota and Lexus distributor Hotai Motor reported a 16.9% sales decline to 9,514 units in November with the Corolla Altis and RAV4 its two best selling models with sales of 1,781 and 1,476 units respectively.

Cumulative 11-month volume was also lower, by 6%, at 108,545 units.

Mitsubishi distributor China Motor Corporation saw its sales rise by 4.5% to 4,099 units last month, helped by strong demand for the Veryca minivan, and by 1.5% to 45,387 units year to date.

Taiwan Honda's sales were 8.7% lower at 2,921 units in November, despite an 8% rise in CRV sales to 1,372 units, but were 13.2% higher at 34,578 units year to date.

Yulon Nissan saw its cumulative sales plunge by 16.8% to 32,922 units; Mercedes-Benz 26,655 units (+3.7%); and Mazda 21,313 (+7.6%).
