Taiwan sales climb in April

Taiwan's new vehicle market expanded by almost 23% to 37,901 units in April 2021 from weak year-earlier sales of 30,822 units, according to registration data compiled by the Directorate of Highways.

In the first four months of 2021 the overall market was up by over 18% at 159,476 units from 134,868 units in the same period of last year, reflecting a strong rebound in economic growth in the country. GDP expanded by 8.2% in the first quarter after growing by 5.1% in the fourth quarter of last year, driven by strong domestic consumption and exports.

Sales of imported vehicles rose by 4.5% to 71,289 units in the four-month period while sales of domestically-produced vehicles jumped by over 32% to 88,187 units helped by new models such as the Toyota Corolla Cross and Ford Focus and Kuga.

Toyota sales increased by over 19% to 46,362 units in the first four months of the year, followed by Nissan with 11,227 sales (+16.9%); Mercedes-Benz 10,457 (+9.7%); Ford 10,261 (+55.8%); Honda 9,486 (+20.4%); and China Motor 8,563 (+23.0%).
