Volvo is to increase production at its Torslanda plant resulting in the creation of 140 new posts.

The extra jobs come as Volvo unveiled plans to raise its hourly production rate from 45 to 48 cars.

“This is a positive and concrete demonstration that Volvo Cars is heading in the right direction,” said senior vice president manufacturing, Volvo Cars Magnus Hellsten.

The 140 employees who will now be offered permanent positions, are already working in the production plant, but so far on temporary contracts.

In addition to these permanent positions, 100 staff will be appointed on a temporary basis until April 2011.

“We estimate that we will manage a continued increase in demand for our cars during 2011 with this increased production output,” added Hellsten.

The Torslanda Plant manufactures the Volvo XC90, XC70, V70, V60 and S80 models. The increased production rate to 48 cars per hours amounts to a yearly production of 155,000 cars.

Volvo Cars’ engine plant in Skövde recently ramped up to four shifts in order to handle increased production of diesel engines from 2,700 to 4,000 engines per week.
