Toyota Motor Europe (TME) has celebrated the start of construction of its new parts centre in Illescas, Spain.

It is spending EUR26.7 million to relocate Toyota Parts Centre España (TPCES) to a newly constructed and larger facility, scheduled for completion in the second quarter of 2012.

The new 13,000m² warehouse will enhance the delivery of vehicle parts and accessories across Spain in line with expected sales growth, the automaker said.

As the current TPCES, located in San Agustín de Guadalix (north of Madrid), could not fully cover the Spanish territory, TME purchased 48,793m2 of land in Illescas (Toledo), south of Madrid in June 2008. This relocation is expected to result in a 53% increase in the number of orders to be served daily as well as in an expanded service range reaching a total of 224 retail outlets in Spain (up from 127).

“This new centre is the cornerstone to allow Toyota to provide a better service to our customers, improve the leadership of our logistics operations in Spain, and ultimately increase our competitive position in and our commitment to the Spanish market”, said TME president Didier Leroy.

As part of Toyota’s ongoing efforts to minimise the environmental impact of its operations and reinforce its environmental leadership, the new facility will introduce ‘green’ measures, such as waste and rainwater recycling, and renewable energy sources such as photovoltaic installations for improved energy efficiency.

The new TPCES will see its direct employment expand from the current 30 to 42 employees. The facility is one of 14 TME parts centres across Europe. In Spain, Toyota sold 49,000 vehicles in 2010 and has a 5.4% market share.
