Volkswagen Spanish unit Seat has opened a new prototype development centre (PDC) within its Martorell production facility, employing 300 engineers in both the technological centre and process engineering area.
The PDC for the first time brings together all activities related to prototype development in both virtual and physical stages, thus providing substantial savings and shorter ramp-up times to launch new models. Seat spent EUR10m building and equipping the facility.
The 17,000 m2 centre combines many facets of prototype development, including virtual vehicles, data control models, pre-production vehicles, standard car assembly capability, productivity analysis and improvement, and digitisation of manufacturing processes.
