Nissan will lay off about 10% of its workers, or 450 people, at its factory in Barcelona, the latest in a series of job cuts by the auto sector in Spain.

The staff reduction will be carried out in April, the company told Agence France Press (AFP).
Nissan reportedly said it expects output at the plant to fall 7.3% to 179,000 vehicles, affecting mostly its Pathfinder SUV. It employs about 6,800 people in Spain.
AFP added that the market for 4×4 vehicles in Spain could be hit by a new environmental tax which came into effect on 1 January and applies to higher polluting vehicles.
AFP noted that, last October, Mercedes said it was closing its factory in Barcelona which employs 420 people while Delphi last year closed its plant in Puerto Real, in the south, which employed 1,600.
