New passenger car registrations in Spain fell over 10% in April to 119,394 units, according to the national industry trade association ANFAC.


Year-to-date the market is down 0.9% as the market had picked up in March by 8.3%, reversing a five month decline before that. In the four months of January to April 502,534 cars were registered in Spain.


4×4 sales were also down. Registrations totaled 10,089 units in April, down 13.3% on a year earlier.


The impact of scrapping incentives under the so-called Plan Prever is starting to fade. In the first four months of the year around 120,000 vehicles were scrapped under the scheme, a decline of 9.1% compared to a year earlier.


Market leaders PSA and Renault have been losing share this year. Renault’s sales have fallen 17.1% in the first four months to 52,300 units. Peugeot sales have fallen 11.5% to 47,101 and Citroen sales fell 8.9% to 51,362. Opel is doing better with sales practically flat compared to last year at 46,449 units.

Gainers in the market are Volkswagen, with sales up 23.6% to 39,467 and Toyota, with a 29.5% gain to 21,871 units. Seat is also doing well with sales up one percent to 49,113 units.
