Spanish car sales in January rose 6.1% to a record 104,874, boosted by strong demand from private consumers and rental companies, manufacturers federation Anfac said.
Sales of 4×4 (SUV) models also rose 26.4% to 9,340 units.
Anfac said private and business demand rose 4.6% while purchases from rental companies leapt 31%. However, sales under the Prever car-scrappage scheme fell 11.8% to 23,000 units after performing robustly in 2004.
The midsize segment continued to top sales charts with the so-called mid-low and mid-high category selling 36,289 and 17,606 units, up 34.6% and 16.7% respectively.
Industry pundits are forecasting car sales in Spain could reach between 1.45-1.6 million units this year.
