The Toyota brand is to officially contest the Korean market from the first half of next year according to a local media report.

The Maeil business newspaper, citing industry sources, said Toyota plans to officially announce the launch of its brand in Korea with executive vice president Tokuichi Uranishi, who is in charge of overseas sales, visiting Korea during the first half of 2009.

Toyota established a sales subsidiary – Toyota Korea – in 2000 to sell its premium brand, Lexus.

The Toyota Camry is also brought into Korea through SK Networks, which began importing and selling foreign cars in November 2007.

The report said the Prius would also be introduced in Korea.
