Ssangyong is considering suspending production of SUVs due to flagging sales.

According to Channel News Asia, talks are now underway between management and unions to suspend production lines for the Rexton and Actyon SUVs which have been selling poorly around the world.

A local newspaper reported that lines could be halted by the end of February 2008.

Ssangyong is owned by China’s Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation which acquired it in 2004.
Ssangyong’s main plant is in Pyongtaek, 70km (40 miles) south west of Seoul. Last month its vehicle sales fell 10.3% to 10,526 units.

In September Reuters reported that capacity at Ssangyong would be increased from 220,000 units to 330,000 units. The expansion would be used for a new model.
