Domestic sales among South Korea’s five main automakers increased by 9.5% to 130,145 vehicles in April, from 118,823 units in the same month of last year, according to data released by the country’s mainstream vehicle manufacturers.

The data does not include sales of the low volume commercial vehicle manufacturers, such as Tata-Daewoo and Daewoo Bus Corporation.

Global sales among the South Korean “big five” increased 10% to 802,657 units last month, from 729,390 units a year earlier. Overseas sales increased by 10.2% to 657,512 units, from 610,567 units previously.

The domestic market was driven by strong sales by Hyundai and GM Korea with Kia Motors reporting a moderate decline which was offset by a strong rise in overseas sales.

Hyundai Motor reported a 12.9% increase in domestic sales to 65,891 units, helped by strong demand for the revamped Sonata and the new Genesis models. Overseas sales increased by 7.2% to 374,303 units, while global sales increased by 8.0% to 440,194 units.

Kia Motors reported a 3.8% decline in domestic sales to 39,005 units, while overseas sales jumped by 19.4% to 237,300 units, reflecting strong demand for the Forte, Optima and Sportage models. Global sales increased by 15.4% to 276,305 units.

GM Korea’s domestic sales increased by 27.5% to 13,086 units in April, from 10,260 units a year earlier, helped by strong demand for the Cruze, Malibu and Spark models. Overseas sales continued to weaken, however, by 3.6% to 46,896 units, while global sales were just 1.8% higher at 59,982 units.

Ssangyong reported an 8.1% rise in global sales to 13,634 units in April, including 6,010 domestic sales and 7,492 overseas sales. Renault-Samsung, the smallest of big five, reported a 15.4% increase in global sales to 12,542 units, with a sharp increase in domestic sales – of 35.7% to 6,153 units – driven by strong demand for the SM7, QM5 and QM3 models.
