Renault has confirmed it has submitted a letter of interest to purchase South Korean automaker Ssangyong in tandem with partner Nissan.

A Renault spokeswoman in Paris said the bid will be undertaken through the French manufacturer’s Renault Samsung division although she declined to comment on the reasons behind the decision.

Renault already has a significant presence in South Korea through RSM, where it enjoyed a 10.8% market share in 2009.

Ssangyong said last week it had short-listed six potential buyers.
