Hyundai Motor Group has announced plans for the launch of what it terms a ‘box-style’ small electric vehicle in the light-CUV segment at the end of this year. The vehicle is being developed by Kia Motors under the TAM codename.

The group has further stated that Hyundai and Kia will launch compact-size electric models in the second half of 2015 and in the first half of 2014, respectively.

A small test fleet of Hyundai BlueOn plug-in models has been running up development miles in South Korea since September 2010. The forthcoming Kia TAM will use much of the technology that has been tested by the Hyundai i10-based BlueOn prototype. Kia plans to build some 2,000 units of the TAM between late 2011 and the end of 2012.

Kia Motors exhibited the Naimo, a small EV crossover concept, at the Seoul motor show in March 2011. The TAM is likely to incorporate some of that vehicle’s styling elements as well as its powertrain.
