Sales of imported vehicles in South Korea increased by 2.7% to 16,674 units in January, from 16,234 units a year earlier, according to data compiled by the Korea Automobile Importers and Distributors Association.

Overall imports continued to suffer from the effects of last year’s Volkswagen emissions scandal. No Volkswagen brand sales were reported last month compared with 1,660 units a year earlier, while Audi sales fell by more than 75% to 474 units – from 1,900 units previously.

The government last August withdrew homologation certificates on some 80 Volkswagen group vehicle models because of the emission situation.

Mercedes-Benz has clearly benefited most from this fall-out, with sales rising by more than 59% to 6,848 units last month.

BMW was the second-best selling import brand last month with 2,415 sales, followed by Ford with 1,023 units, Toyota, 895; Lexus, 724; Honda, 684 and Land Rover, 595.
