Imported vehicles continued to gain ground in South Korea with sales in August rising by 10.7% year-on-year to 18,200 units, according to the Korea Automobile Importers and Distributors Association.This represents just over 13% of the total South Korean vehicle market and reflects a shift among some South Korea motorists in favour of more exclusive foreign brands.

Cumulative eight-month sales were up by 23.2% at 158,739 units.

German brands accounted for almost 75% of total import sales in August, or some 13,580 units, with Mercedes-Benz accounting for 3,662 units, followed close behind by BMW with 3,642 units, Volkswagen with 3,145 units and Audi with 2,796 units.

Japanese brands accounted for 10.2% of import sales and US brands 5.3%.
