Hyundai Motor reportedly has sold a million cars to Africa and the Middle East since it shipped its first batch of 40 Pony models to Bahrain in 1976.

The Korea Herald said Saudi Arabia has been the biggest market for Hyundai cars with 209,420 units sold, among 65 importers in the region. Others include South Africa with 132,045 units and Israel with 127,543 units.

Hyundai reportedly said it sold more than 122,000 cars in Africa and the Middle East last year.

The automaker told the paper it would release new models at the right times, intensify marketing and reshuffle dealerships as it targets to beat General Motors and Volkswagen with sales of 150,000 cars in the region this year.
