Known as the lower risk deployment airbag, the new airbag is designed to reduce the impact caused by the expanding airbag to lower chances of children under the age of six and elderly passengers riding in the front passenger seat being injured by the safety device.

The new airbag also spreads the force created when the passenger hits the expanding airbag away from the face to either side of the body using a built-in inner chamber strap.

The Korea Herald reported that the new airbag will first be fitted in the front passenger seat and in Hyundai Motor Co.’s two North American models that will be launched during the second half of the year. The new system will then be applied to all Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors Corp.’s vehicle exported to North American markets, the company said.

According to the company, as the new system combines the functions of passenger seat airbags and passenger detection system, it will help reduce vehicle production costs by about 100,000 won (USD100) per unit and cut back costs by 40 billion won this year.
