Hyundai Motor launched the fifth-generation Avante [aka Elantra] sub-compact car in South Korea this week, with upgraded safety features and improved fuel efficiency.

The Avante has racked up cumulative sales of 10m units since the first generation model was launched in 1990. The previous generation was launched five years ago with worldwide sales reaching 930,000 units last year.

The car comes with a choice of four Euro VI engines including the U2 1.6 VGT diesel unit and the Gamma 1.6 GDi 132hp petrol. Domestic prices range between KRW15.31m-23.71m (US$12,841-19,888).

A global sales target of 700,000 has been set for the model for next year, including 590,000 exports.
