Hyundai posted a third successive monthly decline in domestic sales in June, hitting a 10-month low in the face of tough competition in the absence of new models of its own.
Sales during the month fell 1.2% over May to 48,643 units, the lowest since August last year. The company’s global sales, however, rose 4.6% to 312,388 vehicles thanks to strong performances in the United States, India and China.
Hyundai is the only Korean carmaker to post falling local sales for three months as affiliate Kia launched new models along with aggressive marketing by importers such as Toyota.
Kia posted record monthly sales of 178,391 vehicles, with solid domestic sales growth for its new K5 sedan and Sportage SUV. Its first-half sales jumped 49% from a year ago to a record 990,261 units.
Troubled Ssangyong Motor also reported a record monthly sale of 7,422 vehicles. The company is currently up for sale, attracting interest from Renault-Nissan and India’s Mahindra & Mahindra.
